It’s been several years since Joji’s last album, 2022’s SMITHEREENS, which spawned his biggest hit yet, “Glimpse of Us.” In that time, the singer-songwriter and producer left 88rising in favor of working on his own label, Palace Creek.
Despite all the changes in his career, Joji’s hold on moody yet hauntingly beautiful music remains intact.
Unlike your typical heartbreak anthem, “Sojourn” opens to metallic grinding contrasting the defeated vocals. It’s a purposeful disruption, embracing industrial production which compliments the apocalyptic feeling of losing someone who means so much.

For a brief moment at the halfway point, “Sojourn” slows down to a standstill, allowing Joji to sing about his shortcomings. It’s an especially hard-hitting moment, considering it’s the first time in the song when he stops pleading for them to give things another chance.
However, his self-reflection is short-lived, with the abrasive instrumental returning with a vengeance and representing old habits coming back.
Since he came onto the scene in 2017 with his In Tongues EP, Joji has more or less kept the same formula: ballad-esque melodies, heartbreaking croons, and a healthy dose of hip-hop.
At the same time, there’s a reason why that formula has worked, with “Sojourn” being the latest in a long line of successes that’s sure to continue.
