Whether it’s their new signing with V2 Records or the announcement of their upcoming album, BLISS, there are a lot of things changing for British four-piece Temples. But judging by the sound of their newest single, “Jet Stream Heart,” they’ve got things under control.
The psychedelic rock band is no stranger to the eclectic, with members James Bagshaw (vocals/guitar), Tom Walmsley (bass), Adam Smith (keys/guitar), and Rens Ottink (drums) inspired to sample for their newest track. Uniquely, they chose to sample themselves rather than other artists.
The approach might come as a surprise to a band that has so far built a career on reviving the psychedelic soundscapes of the ‘60s. But Temples reaffirms that the song is a shining example of what they aim to achieve when making music.
“We always strive to make a bold sonic statement,” they said. “The feeling of music in a club is visceral, almost like you’re directly wired into the song…This song explores the feeling of being seduced by music, being pulled into a sonic jet stream, and having to give in to the magnetic feeling of certain music.”
The combination of a funk-inspired beat and an especially gravelly bass gives “Jet Stream Heart” an edge that sets it apart from anything else in the Temples discography.
While the first half of the song settles for a smooth yet brooding rhythm, the second half allows itself to warp through the nebulous production. It also doubles as a foundation for a trippy guitar solo, which supercharges the song forward.
From there, “Jet Stream Heart” reforms into the groove it began with, becoming something of a wormhole that transports to different styles before returning to its original destination.
