After a steady few years of releasing singles and playing gigs such as Echo Park Rising, multi-hyphenate artist TwoLips is finally unveiling her debut album, Die On Every Hill, out July 24. While the project is still months away, she came out guns blazing on the recently released lead single, “PPL R” which arrives with a video.
Described by TwoLips as “a cheeky commentary on the state of connection in the belly of a crumbling empire” on Instagram, the track balances modern relationships with increasingly tumultuous times that make forming such connections more difficult than they already are.
With production from frequent collaborator Lightfoot, “PPL R” finds TwoLips taking on abrasive soundscapes that are so confrontational, you’d think the shockwaves from the track could knock you off your feet.
From the beginning of the song, the hair-raising scream that segues into the buzzy bass – heard throughout – is the sort of note that puts listeners on edge. It’s all in service of the lyrics, fittingly depicting the present moment as apocalyptic, albeit with a devil-may-care attitude that TwoLips embraces seamlessly.

At the same time, TwoLips knows how to come up with melodies that ought to get stuck in your head, particularly during the verses. That alone catapults the song into a rare zone of experimental frenzy and radio friendliness. And that’s without going into the catchy chorus that’s equal parts war cry and sign-of-the-times declaration.
In short, “PPL R” proves that the long-awaited debut from TwoLips will have a lot to say and prove tenfold.
