We had such a great time chatting with Alec Ounsworth of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah at Kilby Block Party this past May. We finally published the full Grimy Goods TV interview with him. Dude’s such a great guy. We literally wanted to hang out with him after having such a good conversation.

As an indie (and then some) music blogger since 2008, sometimes you get so busy listening to so much new music every day to create our Best Songs of the Week, Best Songs of the Month, album reviews, and everything else that you forget to hit play on the O.G. indie albums you absolutely loved when the scene was just getting started.

Before and after this interview—but especially after—we took a deep dive back into Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s catalog. I forgot how much I fkn love “Satan Said Dance,” along with so many other CYHSY songs. Reconnecting with these songs reminded me why Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is one of the defining indie bands of the 2000s.

Anyway, watch the interview with Alec and chime in.

In this interview with Alec Ounsworth of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, we cover the 20th anniversary of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s landmark self-titled debut. Alec reflects on the band’s early days, his side project Flashy Python, the music video for “Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth”—arriving two decades after the song’s original release—and how becoming a father led him to step away from touring for a time.

We also discuss changing technologies, his songwriting process, new music, and, of course, the story behind “Satan Said Dance.” Alec reveals the inspiration behind the iconic indie dance-punk anthem and what the song is all about.

And if you’ve ever wondered how Clap Your Hands Say Yeah got its five-word band name, Alec shares the origins of it all.
