It probably goes without saying that music can be as cathartic for listeners as it is for the singers and songwriters behind them. That’s especially true for the artists and bands with new songs this week, whose topics range from devoted love to intense longing.
Twin Temple “Love You To Death”
Ahead of their upcoming album, Doomed Lovers, out Oct. 9, LA duo Twin Temple are living up to that project’s name with the newest single, “Love You to Death.”
Fronted by Alexandra and Zachary James, Twin Temple is just the project to tackle romance on a grand scale, with help from their love for analog technology–with production from Shooter Jennings (Brandi Carlile)–and a sweeping orchestra that contributed to the album.
Contrary to the title, the two tackle what it means to love. “The song isn’t really about murder itself; it’s about jealousy, desire, betrayal, and the tragic consequences of all-or-nothing love,” said the duo. “It’s about devotion taken to its most dangerous extreme, to madness, and crimes of passion.”
If it weren’t for the sheen of the production and mixing, it’d be easy to mistake “Love You to Death” as a vintage doo-wop track, complete with lounge-esque vocals and lavish instruments that swirl around like a kaleidoscope.
But it’s these same qualities that make Twin Temple so special, as they’re able to update retro trademarks and still make them hit just as hard as they did in decades past.

June McDoom “Get Out of My Life”
It doesn’t get much more direct than June McDoom’s newest single, “Get Out of My Life,” off her debut album, Follow The Light, out Oct. 16 via Jagjaguwar. The Florida-raised singer-songwriter has already established herself as a force to be reckoned with in the folk scene through her many singles and EPs over the years.
But with the new album, she’s expected to get more vulnerable than ever, with “Get Out of My Life” serving as a journey of self-discovery while McDoom honors her Jamaican roots.
At first, what strikes a chord on “Get Out of My Life” is the fusion between wistful folk production that feels like the center of a forest and a reggae rhythm. The result is a quiet power anthem, with McDoom’s songwriting cutting through the noise.
With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that it’s the lyrics that stick out. Lines like “Oh I wasted my time on you” and “I am so much more without you” speak to the maturity McDoom writes from, while creating a compelling liberation anthem that sets the bar high for Follow The Light.

Brigitte Calls Me Baby “Geordie”
A recent album release in the form of March’s Irreversible isn’t enough for Chicago band Brigitte Calls Me Baby, who are staying busy ahead of their LA tour stop on Oct. 29 with the new song, “Geordie.”
When you’ve earned kudos from everyone, including Fontaines D.C., you know what you’re doing is working. That’s where Brigitte Calls Me Baby finds itself, and the band members are sticking to their strengths if “Geordie” is any indication.
True to their style, “Geordie” finds Brigitte Calls Me Baby channeling what it’s like to long for another through a crooner that can spellbind you with vocals over searing instrumentals. Reflecting the quality of their tracklists on both albums released thus far, the song is as polished as can be.
That’s perhaps the most striking aspect of the song, which already boasts a well-executed structure complete with guitar solos, roaring sonic textures, and vocal displays from frontman Wes Leavins that reaffirm they’re here to stay.
