Truth be told, I was a bit worried going into Thursday night’s Toro Y Moi show at The Fonda. Based off of some negative reviews of their Coachella performance last weekend, I was anticipating a slightly boring and uninspired show. Thank Baby Jesus, Chaz and crew did not disappoint! Alternating between keys and guitar, Chaz led the crowded Fonda on a musical journey with a set spanning his six-year career. While I am a fan of Toro Y Moi’s signature synth pop sound, the more guitar driven songs from their latest release What For?, translate live really well, and the crowd loved every second of it.
The jazzy twins that make up The Mattson 2 opened up the night which thrilled me to no end. I wasn’t sure how the crowd would respond to the surf jazz rock that the brothers play so well, but this was a more forward thinking audience and they ate up every note.
