While on a national tour that brings them to Southern California this November, Austin, TX natives Urban Heat have released new visuals and a reimagining of their most popular single, “Have You Ever?” featuring Los Angeles-based producer/songwriter, Party Nails. The band, led by frontman Jonathan Horstmann alongside bandmates Kevin Naquin and Paxel Foley, recently broke through with Wellness, an EP that shows off their nostalgic 80s sound reminiscent of gothic post-punk and new wave artists alike.
The newest single shares the same lyrics as its predecessor, teeming with a fear of conformity and an existential line of questioning that escalates to new emotional highs thanks to a duet from Horstmann and first-time collaborator Party Nails. Striking synths lead the track against sheen basslines, a fitting description that aligns with Horstmann’s flamboyant style akin to a possible point of influence like Dave Gahan. Party Nails similarly supplies vocals that seem inspired by 80s acts while adding a modern sensibility. Together, the resulting song is unapologetically synthwave by design without coming off as a simple homage to a bygone era, a testament to the timeless sound.

In addition to the single, a new music video also dropped, which sees Urban Heat ditch the office desk setting seen in the original for a blue-purple strobe light dancefloor. If it weren’t already apparent they’ve committed to the synthwave aesthetic full force, the video’s graphics will prove just how dedicated the trio is to their music.
Those looking to see Urban Heat in the Southern California area can catch them at Alex’s Bar in Long Beach on Nov. 6 and Hotel Ziggy in Los Angeles on Nov. 15. Party Nails performs a free gig at The Echo on Monday, Oct 24 as part of the Bonevega residency.
