Best New Songs Released in April 2025
Adrian Quesada with Angélica Garcia “No Juego”
But “No Juego” brings a retro psychedelic flavor out of Quesada and Garcia, who succeed in standing out against the pristine production courtesy of the former. Garcia, in particular, understands the assignment and makes the track her own during her portion, singing her heart out as if it were bleeding from overwhelming emotion. Quesada’s instruments comes in to bridge between the impassioned moments, letting the track’s psychedelic swirl rotate around Garcia. Read More
Wet Leg “catch these fists”
With their expectedly witty sense of humor, “catch these fists” takes after trademarks from new wave, electroclash, and other genres in a confrontational song that turns into a dissection on invasion of privacy. Lyrics like “We’re on our way to the club / Stupid is, stupid does” and “Some guy comes up, says I’m his type / I just threw up in my mouth” are what Wet Leg have become known for, all while over a razor sharp guitar and drums that practically slap you in the face. There’s no question that Wet Leg lives up to the title, hitting hard in a fitting follow-up. Read More
ARTISTS YOU SHOULD KNOW
BEST NEW MUSIC
Total Fucking Darkness “Take It Easy”
The glitchy sounds – supposedly made from sheep noises – and ominous synths complement vocalist Torquil Campbell’s hushed voice before the track enters a brief period of stillness defined by a gentle piano. Up until then, the ticking time bomb aspect of the song presumably built up to a big finisher. But the peace is short-lived, with the unpredictable production leaving listeners on edge for what’s to come. However, instead of allowing “Take It Easy” to explode in intensity, Total Fucking Darkness returns to the stillness, showing a level of discipline that promises more boundary-pushing work in the future. Joalin “GUM” — a shape-shifting pop bop
Get ready to dance with this new bop. Joalin is gearing up to release her new five-track mixtape CAMALEÓNwith her shape-shifting pop outing, “GUM.” The Finnish-born singer-songwriter quickly built an international following on the back of other earworm singles like “GUM,” a track full of nebulous textures and trap snares aplenty for the perfectly timed breakdown at the end. But even before the song’s outro, the lead-up goes to show how locked-in Joalin is leading into CAMALEÓN. Read More
Portugal. The Man “V.I.S.”
In a surprise release that they premiered through a Google Drive link on social media, Portugal. The Man is unveiling previously unheard music from their Chris Black Changed My Life sessions with “V.I.S.” Written at the tail end of their time recording their last album, the Portland-based band, best known for their pop-leaning brand of alt-rock, finds themselves in a 90s-inspired pocket. Think Chris Isaak if he went through a fuzzy grunge phase. Read More
Ambar Lucid “6am”
The last leg of “6am” returns to the impassioned performance from Ambar, who at this point has morphed with the track as though it were her symbiote. Perhaps most impressive is how the psychedelic atmosphere remains intact – serving as a testament to how Ambar can capture such a specific emotion or feeling and electrify it into another highlight in her catalog. Dreamer Isioma with Dua Saleh “Smoking Death”
Unlike the explosive “Dead End” off of the same album, “Smoking Death” takes more after hip-hop than any other genre and fuses it with eerie electronic production that’s indicative of the experimental stages Dreamer Isioma and Dua Saleh find themselves in. At the same time, their approach is far from stilted, with Dreamer’s raw vocals and repetition of “smoking death” showing how they can let loose while the production hypnotizes. Read More
Zimmer90 with Balu Brigada “Learn To Let You Go”
German duo Zimmer90 and New Zealand duo Balu Brigada have joined forces for a smooth, sunny jam of a song on their new single, “Learn To Let You Go.” Referring to their collaboration as your “new favourite international super group,” the team-up between Zimmer90 and Balu Brigada takes on electronic music of the trance variety without sacrificing their own imprints on alt-pop. Alexandra Savior “The Mothership”
Any doubt about her comeback is quickly put to rest by the first few notes of “The Mothership,” where the brooding guitar and percussion courtesy of producer Drew Erickson (Lana Del Rey) put the listener into a daze. Coming in at a little over three minutes, Savior wastes no time describing how she hopes “She beams me up right up next to you” in a Rapture-like event where the world is ending. Read More
