New Orleans rapper and producer La Reezy, having released his latest full-length project, Welcome To La Reezyana Vol. 1, shows his maturity as a wordsmith and overall artist with the track “Have Mercy.” Despite still riding high on last year’s We All Need Help, the 20-year-old artist is looking to keep busy in 2025, whether through more mixtapes or continuing his community outreach efforts.
Although La Reezy knows how to let loose on his songs, often embodying artists from past eras like The Pharcyde and OutKast, “Have Mercy” is unafraid of touching on systemic issues relevant today. Going back to his childhood when he was 6, La Reezy recounts his thought process when he realized a neighborhood friend and his mom were struggling with issues he couldn’t understand at the time.
He does so over simple yet soulful production reminiscent of rappers from the 2000s who often turned to sampling for their beats, while also flowing in a self-assured manner that goes to show how experienced he already is. And even when he’s taking inspiration from other hip-hop periods, he continually comes out on the other end distinguished in a crowded pool of other up-and-coming hip-hop artists.
