Hot off last year’s Soft Power, Fazerdaze is back again with “Motorway,” a new single released ahead of tour dates, including an LA date at El Rey Theatre on Aug. 23.

Amelia Murray, the New Zealand singer-songwriter behind Fazerdaze, has been on a streak since returning to her project with the Break! EP in 2022 after her 2017 debut, Morningside. However, throughout her career, she has consistently prioritized keeping shoegaze and dream pop at the forefront of indie music through her personal narratives. “Motorway” is no different.

Murray said it’s about “a feeling of being trapped between a city and a relationship, searching for home in both, but finding it in neither. It explores an enmeshment with familiarity; and the motorway becoming a symbol of that for me; repetitive, a loop to break out of, a false sense of freedom.”

On “Motorway,” she turns to synths as the driving force of the track, with the electronic buzzing resembling the sound of looming helicopter blades. The sense of dread and aimlessness is apparent thanks to Murray’s defeated vocals cutting through the distant car sounds and a brooding guitar.

Although “Motorway” briefly settles into a steady groove, the lyrics – capturing what it’s like to slowly realize how every part of your life makes you feel claustrophobic – align with the song’s engrossing atmosphere. Despite the plunge into a dark space, Murray’s single is another testament to how she stands as proof of contemporary artists’ dedication to dream pop and genres like it.

See Fazerdaze in LA at El Rey Theatre on Aug. 23.
