As their first song of 2025, Puerto Rican band Chuwi is holding onto any piece of peace they can find in an increasingly out-of-control world on “Falta Algo.”
The quartet – primarily made up of siblings Willy, Lorén, and Wester Aldarondo, rounded up by family friend Adrián López – have mostly kept to releasing singles since forming in 2019. During that time period, they’ve accumulated acclaim and recognition overseas, having recently been featured on NPR Music’s Latin Heritage Month take on their Tiny Desk series.
The track’s title, “Something’s Missing” in English, leaves little to be desired as far as rhythm goes. The guitars, bomba sensibility, and clicking and clanking in the background make for a wildly unpredictable instrumental that somehow maintains a steady danceable beat throughout.
Even when the band moves through varying speeds and segments of the song, keeping listeners on their toes, they know how to get feet moving into dance formation. At the halfway point, they slow the frantic pace, which is otherwise complementary to their lyrics, to let the vocals take up the air. From there, the second half shapeshifts just as much as the first half.
For a moment, it sounds as though Chuwi is opting for a more romantic atmosphere, complete with guitar riffs fitting for a dance between two. However, it should come as no surprise by this point that the band is also interested in switching things up whenever possible, moving into a frenzy of shuffling instruments, guitar plucks, and shaky vocals that show their singer’s full range.
Whether or not you catch the lyrics matters little when Chuwi knows how to communicate solely through their instruments, marking their territory in 2024 with a banquet of a song.
