On top of a recent Camp Flog Gnaw stint, an upcoming Coachella appearance, and a supporting slot for Deftones’ Australia/New Zealand tour, the hype around Ecca Vandal’s upcoming, yet-to-be announced album grows with her latest single, “BLEACH.” The track arrives with a video written, styled, edited, and directed by Ecca herself.

It doesn’t take long to realize why Ecca has taken off in the past year. The Melbourne-based singer-songwriter has made a habit of fusing genres that reflect her identity and artistic vision, whether it’s her beginnings in jazz or her pivot to punk.

Considering the amount of success she’s received recently, it’s only fitting that her newest song touches on themes like rebirth and becoming the person you’re supposed to be.

“‘BLEACH’ is the moment you shed the version of yourself moulded by fear,” she said. “It’s brutal, honest, messy, and necessary — letting the old stuff go to make room for something new.”

The bass-heavy hip-hop production on “BLEACH” proves that Ecca is unafraid to kick things off on an aggressive note, with the lyrics finding the artist exploding her past life in favor of something new.

While that confrontational energy could have served as the driving force for the entirety of the song’s runtime, the ballad-esque refrain makes it so you don’t know what to expect. It’s also why the second half of the song hits harder, where Ecca ends on a smack to the face.

Unlike others who have experimented with the same sound, Ecca pushes this specific hip-hop style forward while keeping the song’s message of reinvention at the forefront.
