It’s a busy time for Jacob Allen, the singer-songwriter behind Puma Blue, with the release of his newest album, Croak Dream, out via Play It Again Sam, and an LA date just a few days on Feb. 20 at The Belasco. Off the fresh tracklist for the album is “Mister Lost,” an atmospheric song that will stick with you due to its messaging and instrumentation.

The song, which dropped as a single ahead of Croak Dream, falls in line with the album’s existential themes and explores styles suggestive of artists ranging from The Prodigy to John Cooper Clarke. While the album at large finds Allen staring into the void, creating “Mister Lost” was a freeing experience for the London native.

“I wasn’t thinking of goals or outcomes, I just wanted to make something strange,” said Allen. “It made me think about Grayson Perry’s book, ‘The Descent Of Man,’ this chapter about how most men prop up the patriarchy because they’re under the impression it’ll serve them, even though they’re actually being squashed, repressed, chewed up and spit out by it.

Like its surreal music video, “Mister Lost” is a disorienting yet alluring experience, beginning with a dark trip-hop groove before threatening to intensify into a club-ready rager.

However, Allen never lets the song explode, instead letting the lyrics that touch on monotonous routines linger like a pestering voice in the back of your mind. In case the production wasn’t already a wake-up call, the songwriting is sure to open your eyes up to how bland life can be.

If your introduction to Puma Blue was through crooners like “(She’s) Just a Phase,” Croak Dream may catch you by surprise. But above all else, the experimentation on Allen’s part demonstrates his range and growth as an artist.
