Death From Above 1979 have announced their fifth album. Private Lives is out January 29, 2027, via their original label, Last Gang/MNRK. The announcement coincides with the band’s 25th anniversary. The duo have also shared the album’s opening title track, “Private Lives,” along with a music video directed by Eva Michon and starring actor Kim Bodnia.
Tickets are on sale now for their 2027 tour, with ticket prices at $36 to $49 for their Los Angeles show.
“The song ‘Private Lives’ is a declaration of privacy in an era of overexposure. We are compelled, often by one another, to share our most intimate moments and quietest thoughts. To what end? More often than not, to be part of a cheap consumer feedback loop. Ultimately though, it’s just a ripping rock song with maniacal riffs!” the band explains. “Our new 10-song LP, Private Lives, represents a renewed commitment to the pure industrial magic of electricity. We’ve never been able to do anything halfway. Much like Kim Bodnia’s dance performance in the video for the lead single, it’s all or nothing for us.”
The album follows 2021’s Is 4 Lovers. In the years since, Sebastien Grainger and Jesse F. Keeler toured for the 20th anniversary of their 2004 debut, You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine, and played shows marking 10 years of 2014’s The Physical World, their first album after the 2006 breakup. The duo reunited in 2011 with a first show back at SXSW that ended in a riot, then played festivals that year, including FYF Fest in Los Angeles. They toured behind The Physical World once it arrived, including a sold-out stop at Los Angeles’ Regent Theater in November 2014 and an opening slot for Deftones and Incubus at the Forum the following summer.
Keeler said that “playing the old songs every day really inspires you to want to make something new.”
“After the anniversary shows,” Grainger added, “we were at once kinda sick of celebrating ourselves but also re-grounded in the true foundational sound of the band.”
For Private Lives, the band returned to unreleased demos they’d held onto. Grainger’s vocals are more prominent than on past records, including on the songs “Like My Ex Did” and “Dreams.”
Keeler shared that the confidence in Grainger’s singing led him to leave more room in the arrangements. “Now we can let each other breathe,” he said.
Death From Above 1979 will tour North America in support of the album, starting February 2 and running through the end of March.
