Fast-rising London post-punk band Savages had a difficult spot to fill at FYF Fest on Saturday night. They were competing with both Chet Faker and Bloc Party for attention, all of which helped setup the night for the evening’s headliner Kanye West.
Despite all of these facts, the amazing Jehnny Beth and her band played an awe-inspiring set at the Trees stage with some new material mixed in with loads of stuff from their 2013 album Silence Yourself.
Fay Milton proved further why we featured her as one of our 20 Best Female Drummers earlier this year, shifting gears and tempos with ease.
“We will play the hits later,” Beth said early in the set before adding the upcoming song is called “Sad Person.”
Savages fit the Trees stage magnificently and Beth took full advantage of the more intimate setup by standing atop the crowd while delivering her stirring vocals to an adoring crowd.
This four-piece proved themselves to be one of the grittier acts that FYF Fest had to offer this weekend and many people I spoke to after the night shared it was their standout set of the day.
