Psychedelic-folk-pretty-music! That’s what the Tune-Yards sound like to me! Tune-Yards is the name for the creative solo effort done by New England-based musician Merrill Garbus. But when she goes live, Garbus rolls with Nate Brenner on the bass (aka Brenner-nator percussion) and occasionally with other friends on drums, bass, cello, saxophone, guitar, etc.
Tune-yards played with Atlas Sound at the Natural History Museum this past Jan. 8 as the first show of the highly anticipated “First Fridays.” Garbus’ music is totally eccentric drawing on exotic tribal rhythms, all the way to a simple melody backed by some bass driven beats. Garbus describes her sound as “a patchwork of sound snippets, of history in a present tense. It is a composer’s commitment to the preservation of stories, however small and unassuming.” Her live performance is one that will keep you hypnotized on what’s gonna happened next!
Following mass critical acclaim for her debut album, “Bird-Brains,” 4AD release the monumental lo-fi R&B jewel from Tune-Yards, “Real Live Flesh,” backed with a new track entitled “Youth,” on February 8, 2010.
