Los Angeles native Eva Gardner—the touring bassist who’s offered her talents to everyone from Gwen Stefani and P!NK to Cher and Tegan & Sara—has finally taken-up the songwriting mantle in the form of her latest single “Dirty Bird.” A jumpy rock piece held together unsurprisingly by a tough, elastic bass line, the single is a taste of her upcoming debut EP Chasing Ghosts and sees Gardner stepping into the singer/songwriter shoes with ease.
Armed with a sharp understanding and love for heavy riffs and early 00’s rock—and the kind of moody, self-assured vocals that echo some of the big named female stars she’s backed in the past—Gardner elbows her way into your ear and it’s hard not to love every minute of it.
Gardner, who is the daughter of British bassist Kim Gardner, started writing songs and performing live as early as fourteen in Los Angeles. One of the early anecdotes of her connection to music comes from being visited at the age of thirteen by legendary engineer/producer Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton) and being handed a bass guitar—just before Johns puts on The Kinks’ classic “You Really Got Me” and proclaims, “Now this is a solid bass line!” And for Gardner the rest is history.
