Beach Slang pay tribute to the past by burning it up on rollicking new album “The Deadbeat Bang of Heartbreak City”

Beach Slang have honed in on some of their most grimy, razor-sharp rock-and-roll to date on their new album The Deadbeat Bang of Heartbreak City, combining their love of brash noisiness with intensely melodic anthems. Lead-singer and guitarist James Alex is at his most potent on the new record, finding a careful balance between homage to past rockers in The Replacements (with Tommy Stinson even serving as bassist on the album) and Jawbreaker.

“Stiff,” one of the singles released before the album debuted, is a prime example of all the heady-grit that Beach Slang has poured into this album. Filled with grumbling riffs and a gauntlet of shredding clamoring hammer-ons and drum crashes, the track burns with all the glorious simplicity of a head-banging rock anthem. Other favorites include the breathy ballad of “Nobody Say Nothing,” and the rollicking, drive-it-like-you-stole-it ebullitions in “Let It Ride.”

“Rock & roll is a church for weirdos and degenerates, the brilliant and the forgotten. It’s the only place a whole lot of us have,” Alex said of the album. “And we’re here for it.”
