Hot Artist Alert: Rising indie-pop star and producer Luna Li enamors with gleaming guitars

Six months in, Toronto-native multi-instrumentalist and producer Luna Li is having a busy year. Li, aka Hannah Kim, had been playing the Toronto indie scene for some time before the pandemic put everything on pause. Her reaction to the stagnation and isolation was to create as much music as she could. The result was her 10-song jams EP that more than lived up to its name as a collection of lush and lilting instrumentals, each one showcasing the producer’s penchant for vibrant guitar-driven pop. Li then went on to release the single “Cherry Pit,” a song that leaves you swooning with its lambent guitar riffs and Li’s breathy crooning. “Alone But Not Lonely” soon followed, a slow burner that expanded Li’s soundscape into a verdant collection of alluring strings and soaring vocal work (as well as a signature luminous guitar), along with an EP that included the previously released “Afterglow” and “Trying.”

And while Li’s dazzling guitar work will become synonymous with her music, it’s not the only instrument the producer plays. Classically trained, she’s just as brilliant on piano, violin, the harp, and drums. She’s also had her praises sung by her upcoming tour-mate Michelle Zauner (Japanese Breakfast), and her appearances at 88Rising’s Asia Rising Together: Benefit Concert and Bachelor’s (Jay Som + Palehound) Doomin’ Sun Fest promise to be electrifying live debuts that will no doubt make her an indie staple. And as if she hasn’t released enough music in 2021, Li is also slated to release her highly-anticipated debut album sometime this year.

Luna Li will be joining Japanese Breakfast on her upcoming expanded tour, including two sold-out nights at The Regent Theater in Los Angeles. Visit Lunia Li’s website, Twitter, and Instagram to stay updated on new releases and tour announcements.
