Finneas has shared a single from his highly-anticipated debut album Optimist with “A Concert Six Months From Now,” a soaring ballad that’s accompanied by an equally stunning music video filmed at the Hollywood Bowl. What begins as a scattered strumming, with Finneas’ low-voiced murmur narrating the start of a doomed romance, eventually bursts in chaotic and pained affirmation — “I never learned to call it quits,” he cries out. The music video for the song, directed by Sam Bennett, offers up a colossal arena in the Hollywood Bowl to play host to the entirety of Finneas’ heartache.

From the moment it opens on him in the dark corners of the massive stage, leaving the shadows to applause that’s revealed as the camera turns to be emanating from empty seats, Finneas’ movements are as transfixing as his heartstring-tugging crooning. He sways and stumbles, dancing in a kind of pain as he relates all the ways his optimism has both failed him and remained a crux he clings to. But it’s ultimately that optimism that wins out in the end, and the song — written in the middle of the pandemic — is an ode to the perseverance of people, even if it’s just the simple, willful act of being able to look forward to something.
