It was a night of sparkled belts, bedazzled cowboy hats, and unabashed coming-of-age anthems for Wallice’s first headlining gig of her career as a musician at the Moroccan Lounge on Tuesday night. And with the way the 22-year-old singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist dazzled the crowd with her eviscerating indie-pop ditties about growing-up a Gen Z kid, you wouldn’t have known it. Opening with a string of hits from her Off the Rails EP, from the poignant anxiousness of “23” to the dreamy dolefulness of “Dramamine,” Wallice channeled all the overwhelming angst and impossible hope contained in her heartaching songs. But despite the weighty misery or vindicating anger of many a Wallice track, the singer was all smiles throughout the night – when she wasn’t head-banging and howling.

The hometown show comes just weeks after Wallice’s first festival appearance at Head in the Clouds, but for her set within the intimate confines of the Moroccan Lounge she had a few surprises for the sold-out crowd. Not only did Wallice debut a new song for fans, she also brought out marinelli to sing with her on their biting, glitter-rock piece “Hey Michael” and her new single, the punchy but sleek rollicker “Wisdom Tooth,” got a raucous live debut as well.
Carr opened the night for Wallice, a fitting setup given the way the artist baptized the crowd in her virulent and ecstatic ragers. A blend of bedroom-pop if the bedroom was set alight, from behind her sunglasses Carr exuded exasperated rage over the shit she puts up with from men, delivered in her tongue-in-cheek morose and sarcastic lyricism.
