Ólafur Arnalds

Icelandic composer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Ólafur Arnalds will be bringing his eclectic creations to the Walt Disney Concert Hall on June 14. Known for his blending of classical symphonic music and modern pop sleekness, Arnalds is an extremely prolific creator who has been releasing albums nearly every year since 2007 when he first started. He’s also made a name for himself playing in various heavy metal bands as a drummer, been integral parts of tecno and electro-pop projects, and composed music for multiple television series.

Arnalds’ most recent release, The Invisible EP, was originally created to be a part of a historical documentary inspired by a time capsule found that told the story of a Lithuanian resistance against the Soviet Union during World War II. That collection of songs is a potent introduction to the composer’s highly emotive orchestral swellings, which grow out of his solemn arrangements of strings and haunting pianos.

Before that was some kind of peace, a project that he described as coming “direct from the heart” and took Arnalds’ introspective music to new vulnerable and affecting heights. Using samples to weave pieces of himself into the music. From the moment you’re drawn in by album opener “Loom” (a Grammy nominated track he created with Bonobo) you find it easy to lose yourself in the dulcet beauty of Arnolds’ soundscapes.

The album is also more stripped down than previous ones, allowing its intimate transmissions to bob just above the surface of its lush radiance. The luminous strings of “Spiral” and soaring vocals on “Back to the Sky” delivered by fellow Icelandic singer and multi-instrumentalist JFDR are just two ecstatic moments on the album.
