The latest single from punk four-piece Surfbort is a clamorous grinder that lives up to their unabashedly freaky and infectiously rowdy sound. At its core, “Never Gonna Be What You Want Me To Be,“ is a face-melting rager that’s made that much more sublime by its crass sonics. Which for the previously Brooklyn-based Surfbort draws heavily from 80s punk raucousness.

Whether that’s Dani Miller’s throat-splitting howls, the shredding of Alex Kilgore and Matt Picola’s guitars, bassist Nick Arnold’s reverberating tones, or the rabid hammerings of Sean Powell on drums. “Never Gonna Be What You Want Me To Be” is an audible middle finger to your run-of-the-mill narcissistic asshole. Between its combustible energy and hot-tempered lyrics, the track is a blazing example of the kind of deliciously loud spirit that fills every Surfbort song.
Surfbort create music that inflames your soul and your ass — especially if past shows are anything to go by. After releasing their sophomore record Keep On Truckin’ last year the band has continued to drop more and more bangers to flail your body to. Including some seriously sweet holiday-themed tracks like “Happy Happy Halloween” and “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.”
