Los Angeles-based duo ill peach has shared a new song and lyric video for “BRIGHT LIGHTS,” they’ll also be opening up for Everything Everything at the Teragram Ballroom in Los Angeles on Friday, Nov. 18. Over a characteristically bombastic electro-pop melody Jess Corazza and Pat Morrissey do their best to shake off chronic melancholy and self-sabotaging pessimism. Aided as they are by the explosively caustic riffs and plenty of brash distortion that fills the song.

“Maybe i should cry cause i’m laughing / Will it keep the walls from collapsing,” Corazza questions in the song’s opening lines, just before that jaunty bass kicks in. “BRIGHT LIGHTS” teeters sublimely between this brisk hope and an equally potent gloominess. If you grow accustomed to life or people disappointing you — you start to expect it and eventually it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. It’s not a habit easily dispelled as ill peach make evident on “BRIGHT LIGHTS” but it is one worth acknowledging if only to realize we all experience.

The lyric video for “BRIGHT LIGHTS,” created by Lucy Sandler & Bucky Boudreau, captures the dually whimsical and somber emotions expressed in the song. There’s the intense chromatic contrast of bright red roses interspersed with black and white graphics, a floating balloon with a smiley face on it trying to get out from under a black block with a frown, or the grainy shots of Corazza shredding on her guitar. All in all, it’s an ardent catharsis that ill peach invokes on “BRIGHT LIGHTS” and another sign that their coming debut album will be no less rousing.

“‘Bright Lights’ is about feeling discomfort in safety. When your home is chaos,” the band said of the single. “When you finally get out of the muck and things start to brighten but that first feeling is terrifying because you either don’t know how long it’s gonna last or you don’t know if you deserve to be there. The ways we self-sabotage. It’s a universal feeling that all of our friends have expressed this year. So we wanted to write about that. It’s a way to feel connected with each other even if it’s through these challenges. Taking grip on optimism can feel unnatural sometimes. But we have to let go of that.”
