Genesis Owusu has shared a brand new music video for last year’s banger of a single “Get Inspired.” If you missed the track the first time around it’s the perfect introduction to the ultra-kinetic and vitalizing music that the Ghanaian-Australian artist has become known for. You’ll also be able to catch him on tour with Paramore and Bloc Party this summer, see a full list of those tour dates below!
His debut album Smiling With No Teeth revealed the phenomenon that was Owusu. One capable of constructing the kind of monumental concept albums he thought only his idols like Kendrick Lamar could conceive. Since then he’s continued to dazzle unabashedly with each new release and “Get Inspired,” a sprinting hype track that hypnotizes, arrives as the perfect bridge between projects. The whole track is an exhilarating rush of digital beats, warp-speed electronica, and Owusu’s own spitfire lyricism.
But the new music video, directed by Babekuhl & Chris Yee, takes the disruptive velocity of the track and offers up a glitchy and trippy visual to mirror it. As Owusu raps away — his bars acrobatically diving and ducking through the song’s bursting chaos — the image of him onscreen gets more and more distorted. Dressed in a red coat and bug-eyed-looking sunglasses the ardent weirdness of the video is a perfect distillment of Owusu himself, whose music shocks with its virulent energy.
Keep an eye out for the arrival of Owusu’s second album which is slated for release sometime this year. And make sure you run through the rest of the singles he’s dropped, which include the exclamatory bars of “GTFO” and thrumming dance hit “Back Seat.”
