Now based in Los Angeles alt-pop artist Carmen Jane has shared their second single of the year with the release of “Cuckoo O’Clock,” a darkly hypnotic track that delves into the double-edged sword of one’s inner dialogue. Originally from Spokane, the move has brought Cami Bradley and collaborator Benn Suede one step closer to releasing a debut album, which will hopefully be released sometime this year. They continue to preview that record with every single, sharing earlier this year the shuddering pop ballad “Mindtricks.”

Carmen Jane’s latest release “Cuckoo O’Clock” channels all the visceral introspection that’s begun to characterize her music. The inception of the track is rooted in the surprising revelation that some people lack an inner dialogue with themselves, something she believed was a fundamental aspect of everyone’s life.

But the artist’s relationship with that dialogue is less than ideal — describing via an Instagram post the jealousy she felt towards people who didn’t have a little voice in their head constantly contradicting themselves. “I’ve been with you all my life,” she sings. “Get you outta my mind / I want you out of my mind.” Frantic and crazed Carmen Jane’s eerily alluring vocals dip in and out of the track’s thrumming rhythm.

Everything from the song’s darkly haunting soundscape to Carmen Jane’s vocals — which oscillate between bewitching lulls and bitingly fierce — encapsulate her deep dive into the depths of her conscious and subconscious mind. As well as the maddening experience that arguing with yourself can become, as well as alienating. So much so that it can start to feel rather self-destructive and less than constructive or even healthy.

But as “Cuckoo O’Clock” makes clear it’s far easier said than done trying to banish that voice. With its borderline nightmarish atmosphere, the single is another ferociously hook-filled song that splits the difference between Carmen Jane’s love of fusing beguiling pop with moody alt-sonics to create an enchanting theatricality.
