Silvana Estrada

Mexican indie singer/songwriter Silvana Estrada is back with another touching release with her new single “Milagro y Desastre.” It is the third release she has shared this year alongside previous singles “Amor Eterno” and a beautiful a capaella cover of Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner.” She will also be performing at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles on Nov. 10-12 as part of the event Canto en resistencia.

On “Milagro y Desastre,” Estrada offers up some experimentation within a song that attempts to harness all the bittersweetness of life’s many changes. Written with only the use of her voice, she then used a loop peddle to create lush harmonies out of her vocal arrangements and added the instrumentation afterwards. The effect on the lightweight melodies that fill the song are heart-rendering and powerfully intimate. Estrada’s lofty and layered coos blanketing you in their gentle sonorousness.

“This song was born out of my belief that big life-changing events are equal parts miracle and disaster,” Estrada explained. “This idea has helped me a lot to understand and heal my experiences over the years. In this song I wanted to vindicate all the faces of love, even the love that hurts when it ends.”

“Milagro y Desastre” also arrives alongside a music video directed by Camila Grandi. Here the pained but inspiring earnestness of Estrada’s words are given physical form as she sits at the center of a room canvassed by hanging drapes and a few dead roses hanging upside down. Her eyes glistening with tears and her voice radiant as ever, the video captures all the dynamism of the song’s minimalist but moving melody.

As the strings arrive the video starts to turn around Estrada, complete with surreal weather changes that start to storm around her. Scraps of paper and debris swirling around her like a tornado of emotion she comes alive, gesticulating passionately as the tumult around her intensifies and the camera starts to pull backward. Leaving an impactful and lasting image of Estrada’s silhouette just slightly aglow in the dark.
