Omar Velasco Offers An Ode To His Mother On Dreamy Folk Single “Un Sueño Arrullado” feat. Mia Doi Todd

Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Omar Velasco has shared a second single from his forthcoming album Like the Fruit Falls from the Tree with the release of “Un Sueño Arrullado” (feat. Mia Doi Todd). The album itself was spurred into existence after a period of immense change left his life in an existential tumult and an enlightening job he took in the midst of it caring for fruit trees. Inspired by their giving and nurturing nature, he penned a flurry of songs over the course of just a few weeks, teaming up with friend and producer Jonathan Wilson to help create the record.

With “Un Sueño Arrullado” the artist pays a heartfelt homage to the language and culture of his Mexican mother. Sharing in that heritage through his talent for poignant songwriting delivered via his delicately robust vocals. He’s also joined on the song by ethereal vocalist Mia Doi Todd, her vaporously luminous cries swelling in the background of Velasco’s lush instrumentation.

The song itself is a spellbinding piece of folk music that dissolves the dividing lines between dreams and reality. Unfolding as this uplifting and otherworldly attempt to remind us that life itself is nothing but a dream conjured up by the archetypal Mother of Creation. Velasco’s softly cooed words tell the story of a young boy who dreams at the behest of his mother only to find such magic beaten out of him as he grows older.

The music video for “Un Sueño Arrullado” also overflows with his reverence for his Mexican heritage. As the artist enlisted his sister Aura Carpizo to end a 20-year retirement to perform a traditional flamenco dance to the music he composed. The result is a stunning film directed by Ward and Kweskin that sees the siblings performing the song together as two silhouettes against a fiery red backdrop. Velasco a shadowed figure playing his guitar to the movements of Carpizo who becomes a blur of elegant hues and decisively beautiful motion.
