Northampton-based artist Megzz has shared her newest single with the release of the deliciously vicious “Boy Will Be Boys.” A trifecta of R&B/neo-soul and pop, her music is defined by an ability to oscillate between tender intimacy and cutthroat confidence. The new song is the latest piece of music she’s shared as she prepares to release more music this year, following the release of her previous single “Too Much.”
“Boys Will Be Boys” offers a vehement rejection of the increasingly outdated and misogynistic phrase. One that Megzz uses to amplify both her anger and vindication at the seemingly endless excuses offered up in service of men who use their power and authority to exploit women. Fed up with the bullshit she unleashes a ferocious litany of biting bars devoted to expressing her exquisite rage and revenge.
The song itself was inspired by a frustrating experience that revealed to Megzz the sexist attitudes that guide such a male-dominated industry. When she was 19 years old she attended a networking event during which she was approached by an artist who tried to use their influence and power to manipulate her.

“But things quickly turned dark over social media,” Megzz explained. “As he tried to blackmail me into sending him explicit photos — saying he would ruin my reputation in the industry before I’d even made a name for myself if I didn’t…That was the moment I started writing ‘BWBB.’ It was my way of being able to express my rage without judgment and a way to imagine what revenge I may be tempted to take in an alternate world without consequences.”
That fantasy unfolds amidst a kinetic implosion of beats that punctuate her already furious lyricism. “Bury you six feet under the truth / Ain’t it cute? I can ruin lives just like you,” she snaps on the track. While her ability to subvert the song’s titular phrase into this emasculating insult — “If boys will be boys / I’ll be the man” she growls — is just the final nail in the coffin of this venomously empowering anthem.
