Los Angeles-based artist All Made Up — the project of musician and producer Allee Fütterer — stares down fears of mortality on her new song “My Eyes Don’t See.” It’s also the first single that she’s shared from her forthcoming debut EP Tell Me What It’s Like Up There which is due out sometime this fall. Confronted with the recent passing of her grandmother, Fütterer wrestles with accepting life’s fleeting fragility and purging herself of any anxiety over death’s inevitability.

Guided by an eclectic ear for experimental pop All Made Up buoys her spirit with an elated melody on “My Eyes Don’t See.” Even as she laments over her existential dread — “Is my clock running out? / Will I make my mother proud?” — the song ebbs encouragingly with ebullient synths and warmly enveloping instrumentals.

Aided by a flurry of rousing percussion and the sharp cry of a sublime trumpet she fortifies herself against time’s persistent aging. Despite the constant reminders that mortality is just over the horizon, Fütterer soothes her unease in recognizing just how incidental existence really is. As the song reaches peak melodic jubilance she sings joyously: “Doesn’t matter anyway / We’re on a rock out in space.”

Fütterer said of the song via Instagram: “Someone I loved had just died and I was about to find out about someone else I loved was losing their vision. I wasn’t expecting that part. I tried 1000x’s to beat the vocals I recorded that night (because I was actually crying lol) but I couldn’t. The truth for me was that in losing Thoma, I was afraid of my own mortality, getting old, superficial shit like wrinkles & what’s it all mean anyways.”

Like “My Eyes Don’t See” the EP will arrive as a melding of various genres — from Americana and hip-hop to punk and garage rock — into her effervescent pop sensibilities. Much of her versatility stems from her background as a bass player for a variety of other artists, including Weyes Blood, JP Saxe, Mayer Hawthorne, and Conan Gray.
