Néomí, the solo project of Surinamese-Dutch singer/songwriter Neomi Speelman, blends the intimacy of folk with euphoric dream-pop on her latest single and music video, “your girl.” With two EPs to her name néomí has quickly emerged as a luminous voice whose core influences — Bon Iver, Bob Dylan, and Ben Howard — reveal the vulnerable poetics that inform her music.

On her new single, “your girl,” néomí leans into a driving melody of glimmering synths that illuminates the realization that she’s lost herself in the expectations of others.

“Someday I’ll wake up alone in somebody else’s room,” she sings against a cascade of rushing percussion. “He’ll act the same but knows his ways like you never knew.”

Although tinged with lovelorn emotion, it is far from being just a run-of-the-mill love song. “For the first time I’ve started to write music not from a place of sadness, but a place of anger,” néomí explained.

Despite her beaming vocals and the song’s effervescent energy, that frustration spills over via her piercing lyricism.”Undefeated, / I’ve lost myself a thousand times to see it,” her voice radiating with pangs of bewildered exasperation. “Just to realize that I no longer believe in / Hollow words that slowly lose their meaning.”

“your girl” also comes with a music video directed by Philine van de Hul that elicits all the urgent bittersweetness of the single. Filmed against the melancholic backdrop of a blue-toned evening sky, it follows néomí as she enjoys the quietly thrilling moments of a budding relationship.

One that revolves around the youthful nostalgia of car rides around one’s hometown and taking in the night with a lover by your side. It’s a moving montage that syncs the exquisite heartache that comes with remembering those moments — like a montage of poignant memories — that haunt you when the relationship itself has soured.

If you found yourself enraptured by the alluring urgency of néomí’s new single, then you’ll be pleased to know she has two stellar EPs out right now that you can dive into. Both her 2022 debut before and this year’s after are lush and charming collections that showcase the incandescent emotion at the heart of her music.
