Los Angeles-based songwriter and producer RYTERBAND shares a melodically lambent glimpse of love’s perseverance in the new music video for their track “Echoes.” It’s also the title track of their sophomore EP Echoes — a collection of four exceptionally intimate songs that reflect on all the ways we as people stumble in our attempts to heal. Lost in the ebb and flow of vulnerability and calloused recovery that heartbreak inspires, the accompanying film adds a powerful new dimension to the song’s touching introspections.

“Echoes” appears as the final track on RYTERBAND’s sophomore EP and offers a crucial catharsis. The song itself was conceived in a dream. After being awoken at 5am on a foggy winter morning, his mind resounding with ethereal chords and lyrics, they dragged themselves into the studio to capture the song before it disappeared forever.

Its tenuous creation beautifully mirrors the track’s exploration of love — embracing both the fragility of ourselves and the strength of such ardent affection. Guided by a spiraling acoustic guitar buoyed by a weightlessly ebullient electronica, “Echoes” traces the momentously freeing and terrifying points in a relationship when the defenses start to crumble.

RYTERBAND enlisted his partner Carla Olivia Torres and director Alex Cook for the music video to reimagine the song’s heartfelt and eviscerate lyrics as a new narrative. One that hones in on the lives of an elderly couple — portrayed by actors Sharron Hayne and John Getz — as they grapple with their imminent separation and the anticipatory grief that comes with it.

The film opens with a close-up of Getz’s character as doctors prepare their home for hospice care, though it’s clear his mind is drifting elsewhere. Its more gutting scenes find the couple attempting to make peace with the inevitable death of Hayne’s character. As they hold each other and care for one another in the face of such an inescapable outcome, the song starts to embody the commitment that love requires of us.

But as they get closer to that moment their home starts to rise — floating into the sky and soon into the cosmos — while reality is blurred even further as visions and memories of themselves start to wander the house. Its final sequences offer a transcendent, deeply moving understanding of death and how we should all face it together.
