Blu DeTiger, Sylvan Esso, and Lambrini Girls top this week’s selection of the best three new songs. Each track will get your body moving with either joy, frustration, or both. Having an album on the way or already here is just one thing that ties these three artists together. In their own styles and genres, this week’s three songs are immensely personal for several reasons, whether they tackle themes important to the artists or show them working through life’s trials in real time. On top of that, they all rip.
Blu DeTiger “N.Y. Baby”
Singer-songwriter and bassist Blu DeTiger is capturing what it means to be a New Yorker on her upcoming album, N.Y. Baby, out Nov. 6. To encapsulate the energy she’s going for on this project, she recently unveiled the groovy title track featuring Holly Walker, Say She She, and Flavor Flav. Like the city itself, the track was inspired by the feeling of constant movement and embracing spontaneity wherever you go.
“Being a New Yorker is such a huge part of who I am, and ‘N.Y. Baby’ is me fully embracing that,” said DeTiger. “I wanted the song to capture that feeling of letting go of control and surrendering to wherever the night takes you.”
While this specific group of collaborators may seem like DeTiger spun a wheel and landed on whoever, everyone comes together in service of the song’s easygoing dance groove. After a certain point, the transition between voices is so seamless, you focus more on how the song makes you move than how it came together.

Sylvan Esso “Sledge”
It’s been four years since electronic duo Sylvan Esso last dropped an album. But they sound as good as ever on “Sledge,” which comes off their new apocalyptic, experimental album, Ow ∞, out via Psychic Hotline (their own label).
Like the rest of the tracklist, “Sledge” finds Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn dealing with the weight of the world, albeit over the sort of production that spellbinds you as much as it gets you moving.
While the album deals with dystopia at large, what makes “Sledge” unique is how it tackles recent events like Hurricane Helene and the Los Angeles fires. The song’s jittery pace keeps you on your toes, with distorted pulses serving as a constant warning that things could switch up at any moment.
At the same time, the chorus brings it all together like it’s controlled chaos. Through the shifting vocal pitches, the duo takes a literal sonic sledgehammer to your expectations. And, if anything, that “Destroy, destroy, destroy” melody will be stuck in your head long after listening.

RECENT BEST NEW MUSIC
Lambrini Girls “Bang Bang Bang”
Brighton band Lambrini Girls deconstructs what it means to be a messiah on “Bang Bang Bang,” from their upcoming album No Refunds, out Jan. 15 of next year via City Slang.
And, in case it wasn’t already clear, “Bang Bang Bang” indeed. Both in terms of the production, but especially due to the lyrics. Lead singer Phoebe Lunny said the song is about “a man who has been revered as a Christ-like figure but also as the devil.” That idea of the devil hiding right under your nose hits immediately in the hellraising drums and buzzsaw guitar riff.
From there, it’s Lambrini Girls doing what they do best: wreak havoc. Even when the song reaches its peak intensity around the climax, lines like “Call him Satan / Call him Judas” and “No more crowns / No more kings” have already made their mark on you.
Considering “Cult of Celebrity,” the previous single, and “Bang Bang Bang” fall into the same category of scathing commentary, there’s a good chance No Refunds will live up to the bar set by the band’s debut, Who Let the Dogs Out.
