As someone who’s lived in everything from a tiny house to a camper van (with the tiny house sadly burning down), indie pop artist Goth Babe now finds himself on the deck of a sailboat.
Lovingly named Lola, which happens to be the title of his debut album out Jan. 26 via Mom+Pop Music, the new home signals a turning of the wheel in his career. From his first few releases, Griff Washburn’s wanderlust approach to life couldn’t have been any clearer, and it seems as though his decision to live on a sailboat was the culmination of a longtime love for nature.
Similarly, “Backwards,” the third single off Lola, finds Goth Babe readying his next adventure with the help of singer-songwriter WATTS.
Over a weightless instrumental marked by blissful piano and pulsating beat, Washburn and WATTS match each other’s styles. Their collaboration came about after staying up late at night, sending files back and forth, building off of each other’s work before finally settling on the final product. The effort shows, with the track sounding intricately made for how clean and straightforward the production is as the two sing desperately before an inevitable heartbreak.
Much like “Bioluminescence” that came before, “Backwards” also received a visualizer that expands upon the by-the-sea visuals established by the Lola album trailer. In all three, Washburn can be seen stoically sailing across bodies of water against a warm sun. Every visualizer released so far has reached a nice middle ground between a typical music video and the vlog-style uploads from 2018 and 2019.
When he’s not traversing oceans, Washburn has kept himself more than busy in the past year, going on tour across multiple sold-out shows and on Iceland, the name of his EP from November of last year. But Goth Babe recognizes a lot is happening globally and hopes the album reaches anyone here, there, and everywhere. “There’s so much beauty in the world, obviously balanced by a lot of pain and suffering,” said Washburn. “I would love if these songs allowed people, even just for a second, to escape the weight and heaviness of the world.”
