After being announced as part of Cruel World’s 2024 lineup, TR/ST, the now LA-based electronic project of Robert Alfons, returns with the new single to their upcoming EP, “Robrash.” Since the release of 2019’s The Destroyer, Alfons’ last full-length album that consisted of two parts, he’s been dropping singles here and there for the past four years.
As the one and, possibly, only piece of new material in 2023, “Robrash” comes in the wake of TR/ST signing to Dais Records, promising an expansion of style for 2024 based on the booming distortion.
In contrast to Alfons’ almost shy vocals, the dark techno-inspired production flourishes in its abrasive sound. While the minimalist beat at the start would be enough for the track to stand out, it evolves, especially on the atmospheric chorus, where Alfons breaks out and stretches his range. It’s not the only time he morphs his voice, as he constantly changes the pitch and mood without any care for whiplash.
The single comes alongside an instrumental version, offering a clearer listen into the intricacies of Alfons and producer Nightfeelings’ work together. The sprawling climax, in particular, is as beautiful as it is loud, with the former descriptor applying to the synths that come back during the song’s chorus. Some background details are also heard in full, allowing for a deep appreciation of the track’s many levels.
2024 is shaping up to be an eventful year for Alfons, with the aforementioned EP nearing closer and more music to come soon after. TR/ST is also set to perform at Cruel World Festival 2024 in Pasadena on May 11, a more than fitting place for his music, considering songs such as “Sulk” off their self-titled album are still as dark and hypnotic as when they came out in 2012. But if future releases share the same transformative quality as “Robrash,” then TR/ST’s natural progression is something to look forward to.
