Dirty Projectors are making a return to the stage this spring alongside the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Walt Disney Concert Hall on Saturday, March 2nd. The night will center around the U.S. premiere of Song of the Earth, followed by a deep dive into the band’s two-decades worth of material. Opening the night will be a solo performance by Mount Eerie and The Microphones singer/songwriter Phil Elverum. Tickets for the concert are on sale now and currently range from $39-89.

Their show at the Walt Disney Concert Hall will serve as the first live set by the Dirty Projectors in over four years. Their last album Lamp Lit Prose arrived back in 2018 and was followed by the sprawling 5EPs in 2020. Yet the band — currently comprised of longtime auteur David Longstreth, Mike Daniel Johnson, Maia Friedman, Felicia Douglass, and Kristin Slipp — has been far from stagnant in the interim.

When the five-piece returns to the stage they’ll be joined by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and conductor Sarah Hicks. Together the group will bring to life Song of the Earth, a song cycle for orchestra and voices written by Longstreth that explores themes like the ceaseless transitions between life and death, as well as the ephemeral quality of the world humanity exists in.

Known for their genre-hopping sound and illustrious envelope pushing of pop, fans can expect a truly dazzling melange of sonic color and symphonic splendor from Songs of the Earth. With Longstreth looking drawing from a wellspring of sources like Gustav Mahler’s 1908 piece Das Lied Von Der Erde and the pocket symphonies fashioned by Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys.

You’ll also want to get to the show early to catch Phil Elverum, the singer/songwriter at the heart of bands like Mount Eerie and The Microphones. A man of many hats he’s done everything from run a label to co-organizing festivals — while his artistic exploits branch outside of music into the realms of photography and painting.

Yet it’s the intimate folk and experimental work he’s produced under both those projects that have made him a much revered figure of indie-rock (especially in the verdant wilds of the Pacific Northwest). You can find out exactly why when he joins his lush and enthralling songs to the acoustic beauty of the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
