RedrumSociety shares the fatigue and ecstasy of mining themselves for new music on the band’s newest single “Dig.” Born and based out of South Florida the group has faced tragedy, harrowing resets, and geographical separation since its formation in 2008. Zach Cohen (guitar/vocals) is the only remaining founding member, enlisting Andrew Platt (keyboards/vocals), Sean Chesal (drums/vocals), and Ruddy Simon (bass) for the band’s since-successful comeback.

With “Dig” RedrumSociety put into explicit clarity the kind of persistent spirit needed to keep making music in the face of creative and existential exhaustion. Before its conception Cohen and company were essentially stuck in a rut — a muddy tire caught spinning in vain perpetuity — searching earnestly for a way out. Like most epiphanies when inspiration finally struck it was like the world’s quietest thunder strike.

“While I was thinking to myself how I feel like I have nothing left in me to dig up,” Cohen explained. “I saw two kids in the sand digging a hole and yelling at each other playfully to keep digging. The whole thing kind of clicked for me right there.”

The resulting song is a buoyant incantation that finds Cohen giving voice to the urgent anxiety that comes with endlessly excavating oneself for new material. “But there’s nothing left to dig,” he sighs in resignation. “Inside of me.” Yet the track’s vibrant sonics and rambunctious melody keep the whole thing afloat and alive. Like an exuberant carnival of sound an array of elated backing vocals, shimmering keys, and buzzing riffs inject “Dig” with a riveting bliss. It’s a bluesy rock wailer that transforms its tired languor into a gleaming and defiant refusal to throw in the towel.
