Los Angeles-based TR/ST just ambushed us all with the surprise drop of TR/ST EP — this latest collection of music will tide fans over until the release of his forthcoming album. No doubt it will also feature heavily in his set at this year’s Cruel World Festival seeing as how it’s comprised of nothing but verifiable electro-bangers. Across four tracks he forges gleaming new hits, unveils unofficial releases, and shares one particularly hypnotic Pet Shop Boys cover.

It’s the heavy sonic pulse of “Robrash” that first greets you when entering the ever-morphing soundscape of TR/ST EP. Urged between lumbering beats and cacophonous electronica the track stumbles in its melodic combustion toward an epiphany of love. On “Run” (feat. Cecile Believe) TR/ST ignites beaming synth-pop with the help of the pair’s soaring vocals, creating the kind of spellbinding anthem designed to move festival-sized crowds to ecstasy.

The short but depthless “Evercall” pools around faintly glowing tones that shift like glacial tides against TR/ST’s poignant and warbled drones. Its mesmeric atmospherics are a firm reminder of his ear for conjuring cinematic atmospherics through such precise but ardent minimalism. “Slug” — a blitz of firing synths and oscillating bass — was originally only available via YouTube since its appearance on the site in 2015. But now fans can add this entrancing cut of shrieking darkwave to their TR/ST playlists.

To manifest his cover of the Pet Shop Boys hit “Being Boring” he enlisted the legendary talent of Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters. The result is a surging recreation of the lyrically dense anthem into a dance-forward articulation of vivacious life-affirming exhilaration. One that builds toward successive drops that punctuate the song’s fearless and unapologetic passion — its chorus made all the more electric by TR/ST and Shear’s refulgent vocals.
