Kate Nash shares a rousingly poignant reflection on life’s transitions in her song “Change,” the first piece of music from the U.K. singer/songwriter and actor after her signing with Kill Rock Stars. For over a decade, she built an international following as an independent artist and released four stellar albums in the process. Her latest single thoughtfully parallels the apprehension and triumph that come with the embrace of a new chapter in one’s life.

Nash’s first two albums — Made of Bricks (2007) and My Best Friend Is You (2010) — were both released while she was signed to Fiction Records. But after the label terminated her contract she started her own, founding Have 10p Records, through which she released her third record Girl Talk. In 2018, between her magnetic appearance on the Netflix series GLOW, she unveiled Yesterday Was Forever via Girl Gang.

“Twelve years of independence as an artist has taught me so much. It’s given me a stronger sense of self and an undeniable commitment to my work,” Nash said of her time as an indie artist. “It’s forced me to face unique challenges and to practice discipline in regard to my art.”

Crucial to the move though was Nash’s comfort with the label’s prime movers. “Meeting Slim, Rob and Sydney made me feel like I could be at home on a label again,” she explained. “My favorite thing in the world is to collaborate with good people. I can’t wait to put records out together and to see where this journey takes us.”

True to that goal Nash’s debut single on Kill Rock Stars comes in the form of “Change,” an uplifting track that billows with all the fragile but earnest hope that comes with adapting to life’s changes. Guided by her luminous vocals and piercing songwriting she attempts to come to terms with such inevitably. The song grows toward a euphoric release of swelling strings and guitars as Nash soars with lush conviction.

“‘Change’ is about relationships and how they are ever-evolving, constant effort is required to maintain good relationships,” Nash said of the single. “You can’t become complacent with others or with yourself. But you also have to learn to accept when a relationship is over, whether it’s a romantic relationship or a friendship or a working relationship or even something within yourself that has become toxic or negative in some way. Things end, and that’s ok.”
