St. Vincent makes a glorious return amidst the bedlam of sizzling rock cacophony on her new single “Broken Man.” The track comes as the first taste fans will get of her forthcoming seventh album All Born Screaming, out April 26th via Virgin Music Group. Keep your ear to the ground for the inevitable tour that will rise in support of the record but for now, those hoping to catch her live will need to head to northern California, where you can find her burning it up at BottleRock Napa Valley and The Masonic in San Francisco on May 24th.
All Broken Screaming will serve as St. Vincent’s first self-produced record. Anchoring herself to the uninhibited candor that comes with taking the reigns, the new single is an ecstatic exchange of blisteringly heavy-handed riffs and furious wails that edge her sound toward an unbridled rock-fueled fury. What starts as a simmering clatter of percussion and rumbling bass eventually grows into a frantic anthem that swings violently between delicious bombast and anxiety.
Directed by Alex Da Corte the music video for “Broken Man” doesn’t disappoint either — offering a stunning visualization of the song’s agitated melody and sentiments. It begins with Vincent lying motionless on the floor before she rises mechanically to take hold of a microphone, flames licking her sleeves and legs as if ignited by the flurry of scorching guitars that erupt within.
As the camera spins around her she starts to dance, flailing with mad but entrancing poise, giving exactly the kind of effortlessly captivating performance you’d expect. “Hey what are you looking at / who the hell do you think I am,” she howls accusatory and wild as the fires start to cover her whole body. “what are you looking at / like you never seen a broken man.”
With transfixing ferocity “Broken Man” heralds a new era for St. Vincent as a visceral communicator of sound and emotion. As the follow-up to the familial reflections of the soul and jazz-flecked Daddy’s Home, the next record may very well be her most unabashedly intimate to date. Closing the distance between the beguiling artifices that separate Annie Clark from St. Vincent — as she did within the fever dream that was The Nowhere Inn.
