The Marías by Bethany Vargas

The Marías “Run Your Mouth”

Cloistered in a velvety intimacy The Marías resurface with the lead single from their hotly anticipated sophomore album Submarine with the release of “Run Your Mouth.” Guided by the dreamily lucent words of María Zardoya, the track was written as a reflection of a tendency to emotionally retreat in the face of confrontation. “You’d just call me out / Call me when I’m distant,” she sings with suave candor. “Always run your mouth / I don’t wanna listen.”

Between intoxicating rolls of bass are woven lucid confessions that reveal the simmering anger that comes with being forced to do so. Take a peek at the mind-boggling and equally transfixing music video for “Run Your Mouth,” directed by Bethany Vargas, down below. Both are an exquisite preview of the forthcoming LP and prove that the Los Angeles band has plenty more jams hidden up their satin sleeves.

“This was one of the first songs Josh and I wrote on Submarine. I was conflict avoidant at the time and whenever someone wanted to talk about something serious, I’d run and hide. I learned that was a protective mechanism and I didn’t have the capacity to open up. There’s no other song on the album like it, hope you dance to this one.”

Submarine arrives on May 31st.

Jean Dawson by Nico Hernandez

Jean Dawson “New Age Crisis”

Jean Dawson shares a trio of grandiose melodics and lyrical puissance on his new project Boohoo. Undoubtedly one of the more rapt and arresting tracks on the collection is “New Age Crisis,” a galvanizing anthem that grows from a pensive tumble of piano keys into a thunderous proclamation. “I feel like I’m gorgeous / Trying to find the beauty in the pain,” Dawson murmurs with reverential purpose. “All I see is scars / Remind me of my flaws.” Wrapped in the foreboding allure of the song’s charged imagery he unleashes a dually triumphant and daunting revelation of the modern soul.

Boohoo is available on all streaming platforms.

Raue “Samba Samba”

Raue tears into and embraces the burning spiral of the ego on their new single “Samba Samba.” With beguiling ferocity, Paige Kalenian — who between howls holds it down on guitar, bass, and keys — and drummer Jax Huckle pummel out another scalding rager. A corkscrewing nosedive into pride and arrogance that is also belligerently openhearted about what a frantic reliance on the self can do to one’s mental health.

As per usual the pair’s rollicking sonics and blistering lyricism make for a potent expulsion of rock. The music video for the song was directed by David Milan Kelly and features grainy footage of both Kalenian and Huckle hitting the skate park.

Catch them opening for Small Crush in the U.S. including a stop at The Echo in Los Angeles on Saturday, March 23rd.
