Omotola has released a three-track mixtape titled Moonlit, Baby, and we can’t get enough of it. The Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has always had a larger-than-life sound, cinematic and stirring, while creating an uplifting feeling. With Moonlit, Baby, were feeling Sade meets Beth Gibbons.
Titled after the Fitzgerald quote, Moonlit, Baby is soothing and empowering, exuding a mood in the same vein as Florence + The Machine, Portishead, and Tracy Chapman. The three tracks represent “a record of three snapshots of existential nighttime thoughts—like if your private pillow talk moments were amplified.”
“When I was a kid I had a boombox with a tape/CD player,” shared Omotola in an email. “I stole one of my parents’ prized tapes and by accident figured out I could record my voice. I went wild, and never really stopped – moved sonically through West African music like Fela Kuti, rap and r&b, found alternative/indie music when I was about 9-11 and built a home there.”
With Moonlit, Baby, all those sounds and influences can be heard. The mixtape opens with “Betty Bop,” a sexy, playful jam with slick percussion. The countdown for a fast-moving song begins with “Fantasy Maybe,” where we hear Omotola‘s silky vocals over a manic, drum-beat-driven track. Omotola wraps it up sweetly with “Chasing Wolves.” Her vocals gleam with warmth and comfort, like that perfect cup of tea on a cold day.
Moonlit, Baby, is a beautiful listen full of mood and vibes. It personifies Omotola’s love for exploring sounds and embracing the “weird.” Whenever she releases a new offering, you can always expect to hear something unique and transcending.
