The year 2025 has gotten off to a rough start. However, artists and bands are showing how music can bring people together through benefit concerts and other efforts. At the same time, musicians continue to put out some great work, many of which are just the first taste of what’s to come. The three artists for this week’s best new songs happen to follow that trend, all while ensuring 2025 stays strong as far as music goes. To ensure you don’t miss a thing, keep track of our Best New Songs of the Month playlist, updated frequently.

Spill Tab “De Guerre”
If there’s one thing “De Guerre” from LA-based solo project Spill Tab ensures from the start, it’s making sure listeners are ready to go into their upcoming debut album with no expectations. Compared to “Cotton Candy,” Spill Tab’s most popular song, “De Guerre” is a 180 in the other direction, bringing controlled chaos via grunge.
Claire Chicha, who sings entirely in French, at first embodies the slow thrashing energy of the track but follows in the sudden change of pace that comes at the halfway point. What was once seemingly an homage to punk and grunge music starts to veer into hyperpop, making for an unexpected single that ends with a small piano solo.
It might seem “De Guerre” is meant to confuse or alienate fans of songs like “Cotton Candy.” However, with all the shifts on the single, it’s clear Spill Tab knows how to unite every aspect of a song, no matter how different, and harmonize it all without any sound clashes.

Miynt “Moneydog”
As the first single in nearly two years, Swedish singer-songwriter Miynt proves the wait was worth it with “Moneydog.” The heavily filtered bass and reverse sound effects set the tone for what soon becomes Miynt’s inventive return, whose voice is just as smooth as ever. Singing what sounds to be a surreal yet cautionary tale about money and fame, her vocals reflect the instrumentation, which is built around the bass but expands in sound and volume.
The guitar and fluttering synth beds, in particular, take the track to the next level, breathing life into the minimal foundation as Miynt’s soft voice glides atop the instrumental. By the end of “Moneydog,” all the elements come together in a soulful swirl that lets the guitar finally take center stage for a solo. Miynt reminds listeners that they shine with their versatility in just one release, never settling for one strict genre classification.

The Altons “Your Light”
Maywood’s The Altons gear up for their first album in six years, Heartache in Room 14, with their latest single, “Your Light.” The track—in the vocal and sonic style of an oldie likely on a lowrider’s rotation—could easily be mistaken for having come from a different time. But beyond the unmistakable worship for a bygone time, the soulful duet at the center is nothing short of sentimental, with the two singers begging for one another despite the emptiness in their lives.
Unlike the time that “Your Light” is paying homage to, The Altons stretch what can be done with the instrumentation. While a typical 60s cut would often be made up of loops and limited lyrics, “Your Light” evolves over the runtime, falling into melancholy when the relationship goes sour and regaining energy when glimmers of hope arise. For that alone, The Altons prove there is something to revitalizing music from the past without going too close to imitation or nostalgia-driven work.
