Hot off the release of her debut album, 11:11, Biig Piig singled out “9-5” with a music video, and for good reason. What starts as an alternative R&B hybrid rapidly evolves into an electronic dance frenzy, bubbling with synth beds layered on top of each other as Biig Piig’s voice cuts through the noise. Given the amount of details, big and small, on the production front, the track could have easily ended up jumbled. And yet, Biig Piig knows how to tie it all together, particularly with an ear for melodies that are sure to get stuck in your head.
At the core of “9-5” is a look at how we’re often attracted to one another like magnets. Although the sentiment could be read as romantic in nature, the attraction doesn’t have to be limited to one form of love, applying to connections ranging from family to friendship. Throw in a chorus seemingly lab-tested for the radio, and you have a rewarding track unbound by any genre limitation yet still universal in its feel-good energy.
