In true L.A. Witch fashion, a brooding bass opens up their latest single, “The Lines,” perfectly. The trio, always ones to deliver songs that infectiously rock, prove within the first few seconds of “The Lines” their allegiance to the genre. With juiced-up drums and a dark yet jangly guitar dueling with one another before a word is even uttered, once the vocals come into the picture, the calvary is complete.
What follows is a three-minute testament to how the 70s and 80s never quite died, keeping the energy alive. The bridge that follows the chorus’ first appearance, in particular, compliments the atmosphere L.A. Witch goes after, letting the instruments plunge deeper thanks to tastefully included reverb and pedals that sound stripped out of the period that inspired the group. And although the trio could have kept with the flurry of instruments heard from the beginning, the drone at the tail end of the track helps give “The Lines” a bit of variety, letting L.A Witch end on an even higher note than they started.
The track arrives with a music video featuring ASL interpreter and dancer, Lark Detweiler. Directed by Sydney Mills, the video gives some serious Pris (Daryl Hannah) in Blade Runner vibes. Excellent.
Mills shares of the video: “The ASL featured in the video is a unique expression of the emotions in Sade Sanchez’s lyrics, personally interpreted and translated by Detweiler. The song “The Lines” features repeating lyrics, but Detweiler wanted to explore the many ways ASL can represent “lines”—tracing the shape of a person, drawing a boundary between two people, or even shooting an arrow toward the stars—each reflecting how humans redefine and interact with lines in unique ways.

On the track, band member Sade Sanchez shares: “”The Lines” for me is a key song in terms of production on this album and the shift in our sound. We used a lot of effects we hadn’t utilized as much before like Chorus, Flanger, and string machines including the Solina and Roland VP330. This is the link between our surfy, California garage influences and our faster, colder influences…You could even say our more European influences.”
