As the last single off their latest album, Natural Progression, “Think I Pass” from Oklahoma four-piece Broncho finds the band embracing folk music, only for it to evolve into dream-pop. The song, appearing on the album’s latter half, is a dreamy daze that doubles as a departure from the synth-heavy bounce heard early on in the tracklist; like the LP’s title, the progression happens naturally.
However, the spellbinding, new wave atmosphere makes “Think I Pass” stand out on their first major release in seven years. The use of reverb and instrument choice on the song is reminiscent of the transition between 80s synths and 90s pedals, with Broncho conjuring up The Jesus and Mary Chain – if they were from the Great Plains instead of the UK.
At the same time, Broncho comes in with their own take on the dreamy folk sound, particularly with the inclusion of smooth androgynous vocals from vocalist Ryan Lindsey and velvety guitar licks. The result is a concoction that looks easy to make, thanks to how seamlessly the band combines every element together on “Think I Pass.”
