Ahead of their biggest tour yet in an already storied 15-year career, which includes an LA date at The Wiltern on Oct. 13. Wolf Alice is living up to their grandeur with their playful rock single, “Bloom Baby Bloom.” The song – from their upcoming album, The Clearing, out Aug. 29 via Columbia Records – comes in with drums fitting for a march that pave the way for lead singer Ellie Rowsell to lead the charge.

Although the band is in top form, taking their perfected indie rock sound to anthemic highs with a healthy dose of the ‘80s and modern day, it’s Rowsell who gets to show her vocal range. She begins in a familiar register before screaming while the piano and synths flutter against each other; a brief shock from an electric guitar also comes as a welcome surprise. In the latter half, she howls as though she were releasing years’ worth of pent-up emotions before ending “Bloom Baby Bloom” with a serenade.

“I wanted a rock song, to focus on the performance element of a rock song and sing like Axl Rose, but to be singing a song about being a woman,” said Rowsell. “I’ve used the guitar as a shield in the past, playing it has perhaps been some way to reject the ‘girl singer in band’ trope, but I wanted to focus on my voice as a rock instrument so it’s been freeing to put the guitar down and reach a point where I don’t feel like I need to prove that I’m a musician.”
