When tensions are at an all-time high in the world, leave it to English five-piece Shame to encapsulate that energy into their new song, “Cutthroat,” off their upcoming Sept. 5 album of the same name. Complete with a new music video featuring lead vocalist Charlie Steen doing a wall of death stunt, the single is the sort of thing you want playing when charging into a crowded mosh pit.

Ever the post-punk loyalists, the band members are directing the devil-may-care attitude of their new album and, in extension, “Cutthroat” towards their detractors. “It’s about the cowards, the cunts, the hypocrites,” said Steen. “Let’s face it, there’s a lot of them around right now.”

Inspired by Oscar Wilde’s “Lady Windermere’s Fan,” Shame’s new song is hard-hitting, not wasting time when delivering their volcanic brand of anthemic post-punk. They also avoid mincing their words, dishing out lyrics like “I was born to die” and “Why not do what you wanna do?” as all the band members play their instruments with a razor-sharpness.

When it comes to lead singles, “Cutthroat” is the sort of track that sets the borderline anarchic energy Shame is bringing to the table with their new album.

And considering they always go hard when it’s time to take the stage, with Steen going as far as to say their live shows are, “direct, confrontational and raw…It’s about ‘Fuck you,’” it’s safe to say any new tour dates are sure to match the heat coming out of “Cutthroat.”
