Coming off his new album, Blush, out via Juno, singer-songwriter Kevin Abstract is bringing in a new era with the help of Love Spells on “97 Jag.” Since moving back home to Texas, the former Brockhampton member has been building up his already accomplished solo career by collaborating with local artists and artists like Dominic Fike as part of a new, revolving collective.
On his new album, Kevin serves as the leading artist and producer, a role he embodies tenfold through the idiosyncratic production that blends genres such as indie rock and trip-hop. That’s especially true for “97 Jag,” where the vocals from Love Spells, sung with desperation and longing, would slide perfectly over a smooth R&B jam straight from the ‘90s.
When Kevin joins, he dishes out brutally honest lyrics, detailing his insecurities and memories growing up in Texas. His verse, the track’s centerpiece, is home to lines like “Wish I followed my instincts” and “My superpowers always end up working against me,” reminding listeners of what separates him from other genre-benders he has inspired since breaking through in the late 2010s.
Considering Kevin has made a habit of creating entire worlds from project to project, whether in a group setting or on his own, it’s no wonder “97 Jag” and the rest of the tracklist show his range of talents while pushing the boundaries. And with Blush serving as a homecoming for him, he’s proving once again he’s just getting started.
