Back like she never left, Grammy winner and The Internet lead singer Syd is back with her newest material in three years, “Die For This.” The singer-songwriter dropped the single as a tease for what’s to come ahead of an already busy 2025 that finds Syd supporting Billie Eilish and Reneé Rapp on tour, with the latter seeing her play in LA at the Kia Forum on Oct. 17.

From the get-go, the stripped-back production helps lay the foundation for the song’s trace-like effect while allowing Syd to slide in effortlessly. Although reminiscent of other contemporary R&B singers, the gradual addition of textures, such as a jazzy bass and subtly shimmering synths, lets “Die For This” grow into a genre fusion that Syd is best known for.

The last minute is when the single takes off, where Syd’s head-over-heels lyrics and instantly infectious melodies take shape. The production similarly evolves, evoking summertime thanks to the lush instrumentation that also serves as a testament to Syd’s mastery over pop rhythms.

It’s safe to say that Syd has had a successful career as a collaborator and as a solo artist. And whether an album is on the way or if she and The Internet have new music on the horizon, her next steps are sure to chart into some new and exciting territory in a similar fashion to “Die For This.”

See Syd open for Reneé Rapp in LA at the Kia Forum on Oct. 17.
